Three concerts filled the Romanesque church with sound
Experts delved into the life and work of its illustrious neighbor
On Saturday, August 6, a new edition of the Emili Pujol Symposium began at the Piedra Seca Interpretation Center, a series of days to learn about the figure and work of the Catalan master guitarist.
The day began at 11 a.m. with the participation of researcher and guitarist Pau Capdevila, winner of the 8th Garrigues Young Investigator Award 2015, for the study entitled “Journey through the universe of Emili Pujol i Vilarrubí. The search for the “supreme art” and recently hired for the cataloging and inventory of the legacy of the illustrious master belonging to the Institut d’Estudis Ilerdencs. He explained the status of the legacy and what its immediate future will be.
At 11:45 a.m., the guitarist and professor at the Lleida Municipal Music Conservatory, Carles Herraiz, documented us with a dissertation on the book “The Reasoned School of the Guitar”, a work that Pujol himself dedicated a large part of his life to with the aim of disseminating and training a method of the technical school of the guitar of his illustrious teacher Francisco Tárrega. A method made up of 4 published books and an unfinished 5th pending to be edited.
At 12:30 p.m., Jordi Guimet, executor of the master Emili Pujol and his widow Maria Adelaida Robert, as an expert and also a scholar of Emili Pujol’s legacy, gave us an in-depth look at the poetics and reflective writings that he left reflected in the manuscripts collected from his legacy with the title “Emili Pujol, in verse and prose”, showing the most humanistic and profound Pujol in his life convictions.
Finally, at 1:15 p.m., the day closed with a series of interpretations of works by Maestro Pujol by invited guitarists who delighted us with a brief recital turned into a master class in guitar performance.
Torrebesses, the town where the maestro lived due to the proximity of Mas Janet, his summer home and where he would collect all the inspiration embodied in his musical and poetic work, takes over from the maestro in promoting talent in the noble art of music. guitar, scheduling three concerts at 8:00 p.m. in the Church of Sant Salvador, a Romanesque temple with spectacular sound that the talented Romanian guitarist Ana María Iordache, recent winner of the 2021 Llobet Contest in Barcelona, performed on Friday, July 15, for the first concert. On Sunday, July 17, we enjoyed a spectacular concert in the church of Santa María de Gràcia de la Granadella with the participation of the Terracota duo, made up of musicians from Lleida Carlos Herraiz on guitar and Jordi Roure on viola. He continued on Friday, August 5, with the participation in the second concert by English soloist Jonathan Ross Parkin, who delighted us with his proposal Towards the South, great European works for guitar. Lastly, the third and last concert was given by the Australian concert virtuoso Jacob Cordover, with jewels of guitar literature and world premieres.
